Ceramics (preparation methods), mechanical and thermal properties, surface characterization).
Bioceramics (application of ceramics in biomedicine, biocompatibility).
Ceramic-Metal interfaces, (wettability, work of adhesion, interfacial energy), and ceramic-metal composites (joining techniques, brazing).

Ph.D. candidate in Chemical Engineering Department, Laboratory of Physical Metallurgy, University of Patras, Greece, with a post-graduate researcher fellowship of the Institute of Chemical Engineering and High Temperature Chemical Processes, (ICE/HT), Patras, Greece (1989-1994).
Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Institute for Advanced Materials, Joint Research Centre, (IAM/JRC), European Commission, Petten, the Netherlands, with an individual post-doctoral researcher fellowship Human Capital and Mobility of the European Commission (1994-1996).
Post-Doctoral Researcher in Ceramic and Glass Engineering Department, University of Aveiro, Portugal, with post-doctoral fellowships granted by the University of Aveiro and the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology ("FCT"), Portugal (1999-2005).
Assistant Professor with contract, (according to the Greek law 407/1980), in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Ioannina, Greece (2005-2006).
Invited excellent scientist from abroad invited by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Ioannina, Greece in the framework of the project ENTER "Introducing Ph.D. Researchers from Abroad in the Greek R&D System" of the European Union and the Greek General Secretariat of Research and Technology (2006-2008).

Research activities
  SA has published more than 100 research articles in international scientific journals that have received more than 800 references (or more than 600 without self-citations); total impact factor >200 and h-index = 15. His research work has been also published in 19 publications in Greek scientific journals and presented in more than 190 lectures all over the world, among them more than 10 were invited or plenary lectures in International Scientific Conferences.
  SA is member of many scientific societies, Greek and international, related to ceramics and bioceramics.
  He is reviewer in more than 30 international scientific journals.
  He organized the 6th International Conference on High Temperature Capillarity, (Athens, 2009) and the 4th National Conference of the Greek Society of Biomechanics (Ioannina, 2010). He has been member of many organizing and scientific committees of several other international conferences and he has also chaired several sessions in international conferences.
Research Projects
  He has participated, as main investigator, in several projects until he joined the University of Ioannina as Assistant Professor.
  He participates in a THALIS research project (coordinated by the National technical University of Athens).
