Introduction

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering was established in 1999. It is one of the 14 Departments comprising the University of Ioannina.

In Greece, solely the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of the University of Ioannina offers a 5-years span of curriculum courses and soon will be recognized as a full Engineering Department, regarding professional rights of graduated students (the process, undertaken by specific committees of the Greek Ministry of Education is currently underway).

The Department aims at:

(a) the most modern materials science and engineering,
(b) providing to the local community (industrial, commercial, private or public sector) scientific and technological consultation on issues related to advance and traditional materials, and
(c) preparing students for market economy (local, Greek, European and global), either in industry or research, and develop their own successful career after graduation, acting, however, as their reservoir of scientific support for lifetime.
